Day 4 Sep 2: Denver, the mile high city

's Ochtends ben ik eerst zakdoeken gaan kopen, want ik had een serieuze verkoudheid. Om 10u had ik een reservatie voor een rondleiding van de State Capitol Dome. Elke staat heeft een capitool waar de wetgevende macht zetelt. Of zetelde, want sommige capitolen zijn intussen louter museum geworden. In Denver staat dus de Colorado State Capitol, gebouwd eind 19de eeuw. Het capitool kan je zonder reservatie bezoeken (natuurlijk moet je wel langs de security als je binnen gaat) en er worden op regelmatige tijdstippen rondleidingen georganiseerd. Na 11 september 2001 werd de koepel gesloten voor het publiek, maar is sinds 2005 weer geopend. Enkel op het balkon mag niemand meer. Jammer, anders had dit misschien een mooiere foto opgeleverd. Maar als je zeker wil zijn de koepel te kunnen bezoeken, kan je dus best op voorhand reserveren. Het is ook enkel te bereiken via de trap. De bezoeken zijn gratis.
Op de 15de trap staan de woorden 'One mile above sea level' gegraveerd. Denver ligt namelijk 1 mijl (ongeveer 1,5 km) boven de zeespiegel. En op die 15de trap is het exact 1 mijl. Jaren later ontdekte iemand dat het eigenlijk de 18de trap moest zijn. Vandaar dat ze een tweede kenteken plaatsten. Uiteindelijk werd in 2003 besloten dat het toch maar de 13de trap moest zijn: 3de kenteken. Met dit verhaal kom ik op een van de bijnamen van Denver: the Mile High City.

In the morning I went to buy tissues, because I had a serious cold. I had a reservation for the State Capitol Dome tour at 10am. Every state has a capitol which is home of the legislature. Or was, because some have become a museum in the mean time. So in Denver you have the Colorado State Capitol, built at the end of the 19th century. You can visit the capitol without a reservation (after passing security) and they regularly have tours of the building. The dome was closed for public after September 11, 2001, but has reopend in 2005. You can't enter the balcony anymore unfortunately, otherwise my picture might have been better. But so if you want to be sure to visit the balcony it's best to make a reservation in advance. You are obliged to take stairs to reach it. The visits are for free.
On the 15th stair they engraved the words 'One mile above sea level'. Denver is situated 1 mile (about 1,5km) above sea level. And the 15th stair is the exact spot. Years later however they discovered it should have been the 18th stair. So they placed a second marker. Eventually in 2003 they decided it was the 13th stair so now there are 3 markers. This takes me to one of Denver's nicknames: the Mile High City.

Na het bezoek ben ik mijn spullen naar de jeugdherberg gaan brengen, omdat ik weer een reservatie had: om 14u bij de US Mint. Hier zijn ze echter strenger en mag je zo goed als niets meenemen. Ik kan dus geen foto's laten zien. In de US Mint maken ze muntstukken. Vroeger hebben ze hier zelfs Belgische Franken gemaakt, maar tegenwoordig maken ze enkel nog Amerikaanse munstukken. Niet zo enorm interessant, maar ook hier is het bezoek weer gratis. En uiteindelijk zijn er slechts 4 locaties in de VS waar ze muntstukken produceren.
Dan ben ik snel mijn spullen terug gaan halen en naar het Colorado History Museum gegaan. Een museum over de geschiedenis van de staat Colorado dus. Klein, maar fijn.

After my visit I brought back my stuff to the youth hostel, because I had another reservation: 2pm at the US Mint. They are stricter here and you can hardly take anything with you. So I have no pictures to show. In the US Mint they make coins. They used to even make Belgian Franks, but nowadays they only make American coins. It wasn't that interesting, but this visit is for free too. And in the end there are only 4 locations in the US where they make coins.
Afterwards I quickly went back to get my things and visit the Colorado History Museum. It's small, but quite interesting.



Na het museum ben ik naar het visitor center gegaan om een reservatie te maken voor een dagtrip naar het Rocky Mountain National Park. Dit is via Greyline Sightseeing Tours. Zij organiseren nog andere trips en zijn ook op andere plaatsen in de wereld vertegenwoordigd.
